GD 201 - Final 10 Pager

Game Concept

My game concept is an RPG, Episodic, Third Person game called Corruption. It’s strictly recommended to be played single player but since it’s an RPG maybe co-op (2-4 players) matchmaking will be an option. It will come first exclusively on console then move over to PC and will not be going to mobile or VR. With the game being episodic, it means that there will be multiple episodes that you will have to purchase to continue in the storyline so if co-op is a feature, both or all players must purchase the next episode to continue with their friends. There will also be decisions you make throughout the story as you progress, with every decision you make there will be a change in the storyline so multiple decisions, multiple consequences and multiple endings. There are multiple goals you can set, wins and losses in the game, a goal for example, you can go rogue and kill every NPC you see (if you are allowed to make the decision among you or the group you are with) and see what ending you get or maybe you can be a pacifist and not kill every enemy you see and try to reason with them and see what ending you get that way. Losses come with dying to enemies that may be too overpowered for you and/or your group to defeat and win come with defeating those enemies. Say for example, if you need materials for upgrading your gear, you can explore specific parts of the open world but you can’t go to a high level area or an area that requires an episode. What you will most likely be doing in the game is progressing through the storyline alone or with friends, while making your character and stats stronger to fight stronger enemies and unique bosses.

Story/Setting

In a universe vastly different and very much advanced from ours, humanity is on the face of extinction due to a long lasting war with the demons of Azarath. A black mist the demons spread is said to infect and kill anyone that inhales it and it only takes a couple of minutes for the effects to kick in. Those who have been lost to the mist are resurrected themselves as demons, humans have dubbed them the "Corrupted". Humans who are prepared and skilled in combat are sent out to take back landmarks humanity once had. The goal of the game, which will be broken up into DLC episodes, is to prevent the spread of the mist and stop the war between humans and demons once and for all.

Game Mechanics

Action mechanics that fall into the game are simple ones like running, jumping or dodging an enemy attack but there are also ones that involve a random number generator, or RNG for short. Throughout the game as you progress in the story and quest line within the game, loot drops are randomly generated depending on the type of quest you are completing and enemy or boss you are fighting, as well as the combat system, like how much damage you do for striking your enemy with your sword or using a skill that teleports you and attacks them from behind is randomly generated as well. An example for loot RNG, say you are doing a quest that is level 30 and above, chances are you can obtain a legendary loot whether it’s a piece of armor or weapon. Rare chances are you get a unique, yellow or goldish color, piece of gear or a weapon. It is all randomly generated and based on a set of numbers that either gives you a legendary or unique gear set or even a duplicate piece that you already have.  Rule mechanics, such as you aren’t allowed to go to a high level area until you reach that required level or until you have the required expansion, you can’t attack civilians or wild animals, you can’t break down buildings and you cannot willingly teleport out of the map.

Character/Controls

To start off with the RPG aspects, your character is completely customizable, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hair, etc. The only change that will have a look effect on your character is the armor and headpiece you wear but of course you have the ability to toggle that on and off. If you don’t like how your character looks with a certain color that isn’t matching their armor, you can change their appearance in-game. The controls to move your character and camera are unchangeable for example, PC will be WASD + holding Right Click for the camera and Console will be the sticks, but the keybinds to use abilities, potions and dodging can be changed to your preferred buttons if you want.

Gameplay Experience

For the pacing of the game it would be on the players own time depending on what the player is engaging in. For example, if a player is in a dungeon raid with others, the pace would be somewhat chaotic but normal pace because it requires a lot of attention to put damage on to the boss and other enemies, apply defensive and offensive buffs, watching your health, etc. If the player is say roaming around the open world, which would be the scope of the game, there could be areas that are more punishing than others where you can possibly lose items but it’s up to the player where they would like to engage in that kind of pace, but other than that the open world roaming pace is mostly average and giving you time to explore things on your own. As time goes on with the player leveling up, getting high varieties of gear, the difficulty world level can increase being from 0, which is how everyone starts off, all the way to world level 5, all this brings more and newer enemies, better and more different pieces of weapons and gear, and higher level dungeons and raids. The impact of the game focuses and tries to deliver a frustrating but end rewarding impact for the player.

Game Conflict

Conflict that players will have in the game is to worry about and keep track of their health bars, stamina, SP usage and even things like their inventory. These are very vital mechanics to watch during encounters with enemies such as minions, raid bosses or even other players. During expeditions, quests, and raids, players will have to keep in mind of their inventory to ensure they have enough space to hold what they want, and consumables like health and mana potions. The exceptions of minibosses and bosses can be found in the open world, raids and specific quests. There can be many world changing events that go on, some can affect only environments, only players, or both. Some world changing events could be a blizzard that can lower a players temperature and they have to find shelter with proper warmth to get their temperature back up and players shouldn’t go back out until the blizzard is cleared.
